With the constant worry and anxiety that is being caused by the current COVID-19 situation, we all want something to give us a lift and blow away our lockdown blues. Well it seems as though Duo-Tone Productions and Sense of Sound Singers have concocted the perfect remedy. The Liverpool record label have collaborated with the vocal collective to create a feel-good summer single, Time and Time Again. We caught up with the Manager and creative force behind Sense of Sound Singers, Jennifer John, to talk about working with Duo-Tone to produce their first original single.
The choir have a pretty straightforward yet appealing mission statement, to spread happiness through music and bring people together through a shared love of singing. This ethos shines through in Time and Time Again, a track that, as Jennifer herself described, is packed full of “feel-good disco vibes and classic disco harmonies which Sense of Sound loves to do”. The new song was written by Jennifer and Producer Tom Longworth and taps into a nostalgic disco enthusiasm with an added modern twist.
The infectious Disco/House beat comes from Duo-Tone Productions, the creative production house of Duo-Tone, the Liverpool-based Electronic record label. They have previously had success releasing tracks from the likes of KOVA (which hit the Upfront Club Charts Top 10) and Josh Hunter (which has received extensive support from Radio 1 and KISS FM). They have now expanded beyond their label/event format to present their own tracks, collaborating with some of Liverpool’s best vocalists, under the name of Duo-Tone Productions.
This is now the second time that they have worked with Sense of Sound Singers, the first being a cover of the Aly-Us classic ‘Follow Me’. The modern Disco interpretation seemed to resonate amongst DJs and fans and the pairing seemed to click for both parties. Jennifer felt that they worked well with Duo-Tone, “It's cool. They are pretty flexible in their openness to our suggestions and also to collaborating on ideas and co-writes with the producers”.
It is great to see the collective, who have provided the backing vocals for so many big artists, to finally take centre stage and show what they are all about. Time and Time Again really showcases how talented they all are. The verse, led by Jennifer, is strong and soulful. It builds to an uplifting chorus that brings in the whole choir to create a euphoric Disco energy.
This insatiable energy shines through even more in the choir’s live performance. “Live we are prone to adding a little extra as we are a pretty spontaneous bunch of singers. Most importantly we like to party!”. Of course, right now they have not been performing, however they did bring their party atmosphere to Liverpool Digital Music Festival last week.
The festival performance showed that Sense of Sound have come a long way over the past 12 months and really beginning to establish themselves as an exciting group of versatile creatives.
“We are forever evolving and love all different styles of music and performance experiences. We've worked alongside so many different types of artists/events from Niles Rodgers and Chic through to Cream Classical and Paloma Faith so we love a touch of the theatrical, flamboyance and fun”.
The new track has been released as an EP including a dub version and remixes from Lazy Legs and Defected Glitterbox DJ Natasha Kitty Katt. So if you need something to get you in the party mood and lose yourself in some feel-good music then get streaming Time and Time Again now.
