Forming in Newcastle in 2017, identity and life experiences have formed the backbone of Pit Pony’s sound. Over the years they’ve toured extensively with the likes of IDLES and have performed countless memorable festival sets. Following on from their 2022 debut album 'World To Me', they have returned with two new singles 'Well Well' and 'Cut Open'.
The first of which exhibits exactly what we have come to love about Pit Pony. The gloomy groove is instantly hypnotic charging forward with power and purpose, offering a sonic tension that is ready to burst. The vocals are both melodic yet full of a tempting mystery, oozing with a resonant Rock power in a style similar to The Mysterines. The chorus is full of swirling guitar lines akin to The Blinders while the melodies soar. So much fun and the perfect high-intensity hit to mark their return.
However, 'Cut Open' carries a slightly more contemplative and easy-going sound. The ponderous waltzing rhythm makes your hips swing from the start and the deep bass notes have more of a soothing, Blues feel to them. The lead vocals have a slightly theatrical twang, beautifully matched by the strings and delicate chimes. This dramatic twist on the usual Pit Pony sound sees them takes hints of The Last Dinner Party and CMAT but combine it with their grittier Northern style in similar fashion to Picture Parlour. It's a really cool development for the band that adds some dynamic depth to their discography and makes us intrigued for what is to come.
