Ever wondered what it would feel like to be the main character in a coming-of-age movie, struggling to find your way yet having a smashing Indie soundtrack behind you? Well, shut your eyes and immerse yourself in the new 5-track EP from Evening Is Youth.
The Auckland trio, formed of Luke Lattimore, Jack Collin and Connor Robinson-Pierce, explore the anxieties and worries of adolescence in their youth, starting with the opening track (and their first 2021 single) ‘Did you find your brain?’. Despite the feel-good Indie rhythm the track embodies, the opening verse immediately alludes to a weightier topic; the fear of change and loneliness teenagers might feel:
"I thought I’d like to
But change isn’t the cure
To dreams of being happy
I’m still alone"
This then flows into the next, heavier, track ‘Around you’ which explores the idea of identity, not liking yourself and disguising yourself "to be alive". To reflect these feelings, Evening Is Youth adopt a faster, heftier instrumental that will still have you dancing along. Going into something more light-hearted, which is noted through the more relaxed rhythm and vocal focused verses, ‘I’m glad I left’ offers an insight into how leaving, and that change we so feared in ‘Did you find your brain?,’ can be a blessing but without the right person it might not be what you expected:
"I’m glad I left but I don’t reject
That I miss the way it felt...
It’s not the way I thought it out"
As the song continues, and the song builds, the inner turmoil of being without the person you love takes over the initial feeling of being glad. After this, the EP slows down into a longer, more thought-provoking song of ‘Here with you’ reminiscing on old memories of that special someone. The beat of this song is steadier and slower than the others, showing life was easier spending "nights in with you". In the finale of the EP, ‘I wish you adored me’ starts slow with notes of acoustic guitar popping through, building up towards the end of the song mirroring the narrator's frustration of being left in the dark, alone.
This self-titled debut EP from the New Zealand group is the perfect Indie soundtrack if you are struggling with the anxieties of adolescent life, love, and change.
