Welsh Rock outfit The Montagues have just released their new EP ‘Verona’ and you can tell from the very first moments of the opening song that it holds a brooding drama beyond your average Indie sound.
The track in question, ‘Juicebox’, opens with an ominous electro hum and the tingling tension of ride cymbal hits before bursting into life with a thundering drum rhythm and beautifully dark yet catchy guitar line. The vocals arrive with power and passion, delivering each line with a bite that prepares your senses for the huge chorus that’s is full to the brim with cacophonous sound. A raucous opener to the EP.
This is followed up by ‘Vehemently’ which highlights the drama and surprising tenderness of their music even more strongly. When a Rock act has such powerful tracks you may expect them to be purely focused on creating a big energy and driving home the head banging riffs. However, The Montagues wonderfully demonstrate how to inject a more delicate and melodic touch to otherwise intense Rock anthemia. This is a definite singalong for live shows!
‘Gravitate’ and ‘Circus’ lean further into the soulful Rock and Roll flair, bringing earworming riffs and mosh-ready energy before ‘Breathe’ brings proceedings to a close, aptly singing the line “I know we’ll meet again”.
This closer begins with raspy vocals that are dripped in heartache and backed by contemplative instrumentals that, again, build a tension for what is to come! The track slowly grows in power and intensity, resulting in an exhilarating instrumental finale with a piercing guitar solo and thrashing drum sound.
This is a thrilling Rock EP that is laced with a greater emotive subtlety and melodic finesse than you may be used to.
