EP REVIEW: Sophie Lilah - Fear/Instinct

Perth-based singer-songwriter Sophie Lilah has captivated fans with every release ever since her stunning 2023 debut 'Cups'. Her music weaves poignant sentiments with tranquil vocal deliveries that breathe a fresh air into a rich Indie-Folk soundscape. Her new EP 'Fear/Instinct' is the perfect culmination of her progression over the last couple of years and acts as a wonderful showcase for why she has become so hotly talked about.

Opening track 'Real' immediately hooks you in with the swooping Folk instrumentals and absolutely stunning vocals that are delicate and loose in moments and full-bodied and powerful in others. This vocal versatility acts as a n impressive tool, completely controlling the emotion of the song throughout. As Sophie explores the emotive contemplations of an adolescent mind, the dreamy soundscape and layered vocals create a blissful sonic realm for you to drift away into.

Tracks like 'Content but I find' and 'Sinking' highlight Sophie's wonderful songwriting as she implements unique, lucid melodic flows that have a really natural and effortless style to them. 'Dreamland' provides the most energetic song on the EP as she dives into more of a groovy Indie rhythm that contrasts the high crispness of her vocals with the deep bass line and funky drum shuffle. This shows another string to Sophie's bow and acts a really cinematic and exciting midpoint to the EP.

Meanwhile, 'Collecting Dust' sees her explore a more angsty sound with melancholic vocals and a hypnotic acoustic roll bolstered by the occasional electronic hum that rumbles with a gloomy reverberance.

Overall, this is a fantastic debut EP that showcases many different sides to Sophie Lilah's songwriting while always focusing attention on the distinctive beauty and versatility of her vocals.
