EP REVIEW: Sixten - Misemotional

Acclaimed Swedish songwriting duo Sixten make music that has a magical spirit, radiating with deep emotion and ethereal wonder. Their new EP ‘Misemotional’ beautifully balances sentimental emotion with glossy, Indie Pop soundscapes to create a dreamy 6-track singalong. The opening title track is the catchiest number on the EP, combining undeniably catchy vocal melodies with a shimmering synth-led sound in a style comparable to our local favourites Abbie Ozard and PIXEY.

‘Losing Game’ follows suit with an equally melodic, indie groove that showcases their vocal lends and creates a nostalgic, contemplative feel. Meanwhile,  ‘Atlantic’ explores a richer, folkier sound that emits the natural tones many might expect from a Scandinavia outfit. The poignancy really shines on this one.

‘Ocean in Me’ has a more commercial, swooping sound akin to Lana Del Rey and ‘Thrown Down’ lulls you into a hypnotic groove before the closing track ‘Living Comes With Dying’ completes the EP with a heartfelt finale.

The warm guitar tone and delicate, rolling flow immediately draw your attention in close. Then, as the pair’s vocals intertwine with seamless interaction, the cosy, heartfelt sentiments start to stir your emotions. The track grows slowly, introducing a deep bass drum that pulses in the backdrop as well as swelling textural strings that inject a cinematic quality.

A wonderfully constructed EP that is rich in instrumental arrangement, emotive power and honest lyricism. One of our favourite Scandi newcomers.
