With wholesome, cosy tones that ring of Courtney Barnett and a lyrical approach that is appealingly unfiltered and down-to-earth, Luce Rushton has crafted a Lo-Fi Indie sound that is both sonically comforting and emotively challenging in equal measure.
Their upcoming EP ‘Slinkey’ (Out June 6th) showcases a more poignant, raw and mature sound than some of their past work, combining hazy textures with bittersweet melodic flows that bend and weave loosely through their songs.
‘Night Drive Through’ feels like a playful, nighttime contemplation with some stripped-back guitar playing adding a shimmering sparkle into the dark night soundscape. However, we feel that Luce is at their best in songs like ‘Quickly’ where you can feel all ends of their emotive spectrum.
The opening has a soothing, tranquil nature with jangly acoustics, delicate vocals and a warming electro hum. Yet, angst quickly builds as Luce’s vocals gain a bite, building to a grittier Lo-Fi Garage chorus with free flowing vocals and a crunchy guitar texture before bending back into intimate, low key contemplations. It’s a wonderful journey both emotively and sonically.
Title track ‘Slinky’ explores the poignant overarching theme of becoming comfortable in yourself and accepting a more lucid sense of self. Speaking on the title, Luce said: “The word slinky reminds me of the feminine clothes I would feel so uncomfortable in and at the same time the word makes me think of how free and malleable my gender feels to me now” Luce explains about the EPs title track. “I am more comfortable with both femininity and masculinity now in a way I never was before and there is a slinkiness between them.”
Whether you like dreamy Lo-Fi sounds that you can melt away to on a lazy Sunday or complex emotive storytelling that explores deep, sentimental experiences then this is a fantastic EP to indulge in.
