20-year-old Manchester rising Alternative star, Chloe Slater, has made her first huge statement on the North-West scene with the release of her debut EP ‘You Can’t Put A Price On Fun’. The EP covers a range of lyrical sentiments both personal and political while perfectly capturing the aesthetic of Gen-Z living both in content and delivery.
Â
A standout on the EP has top be 'Nothing Shines On This Island', which paints a damming reflection on modern-day society, tackling the issues of a post-Brexit Britain and the disassociation that young people feel with the current government and modernity in general. The track is an explosive Alt Rock anthem that showcases Slater’s powerful yet poetic lyricism. Slater’s witty take on the current society is fantastic and hits the mark perfectly. Her ability to perfectly articulate the frustration that the younger generation feels with the modern-day British political battleground is remarkable.
Â
The tongue-in-cheek nature of her lyricism is fantastically accurate and sums up the gloomy atmosphere that the modern youth feel with the right-wing culture, as shown through the phrase "You don't need doctors that are government assisted, I'd never catch you in a jumper off of vinted". These heavy lyrics are matched by instrumentation that is so hard hitting, it will leave you feeling like you have just been hit with a firm, musical uppercut.
Â
Another notable track is '24 hours', a more personal song that carries to sunken-eyed cool swagger of acts like Wet Leg and English Teacher with a slightly more pop-tinged chorus that is just as powerful as 'Nothing Shines On This Island', yet with a more inescapable commercial melody.
The rest of the EP flicks between these angsty attacks, personal introspections and overall embodiment of modern young-adult life. Chloe is fast becoming the most exciting act in the North-West.
