Hailing from the city of Norwich, Bag of Cans’ latest EP, ‘Favourite Shirt’, is sixteen minutes of attention-grabbing energy, overflowing with explosive guitar riffs, a good dose of quaint Britishness and an impressive ability to turn the mundanities of life into Post-Punk bangers.
Fusing an early ‘90s Blur sound with the Streets-esque spoken word sections, this EP navigates topics from someone’s new favourite shirt to achieving your swimming badges much to your mother’s pride. These tales of the day-to-day are delivered by frontman George Baker, whose classic Indie-Rock singing style over fast-paced, addictive guitar riffs somehow makes the somewhat odd topic choices seem fantastically interesting. As well as frontman and vocalist, George also commandeers the trumpet, a resurgent member of Rock instrumentation that reminded us of Black Country, New Road and only feeds the twee humour that drives this EP.
This humour culminates in the final track, in which we hear George's escalating rage at a bar’s lineup of dodgy flavoured IPAs and vegetable crisps, when all he seeks is two pints of lager. It’s a struggle we can all understand, thus seeing the EP off on a hilarious high, marking it as one of our favourite recent projects.
