MANA are an Irish and Berlin based band who strive to make a statement about the world, and they have a new single called ‘Nauseating Me'. The song is intense and immersive, transporting the listener into a world which their music video perfectly captures, a dark and isolated night where the only light shines from streetlights and vacant bars, perfect for these upcoming winter months.
Greg Clifford’s haunting voice seeps into our ears straight away as Shane Byrne’s reverberated and ever-expanding guitar echoes continually. This reminds us of the Shoegaze / Indie of the 1980s, expanding on the dream-like feeling that’s encapsulated in this song. In addition, Greg’s lyrics suggest a desperate desire to escape this overwhelming and isolated life through distractions. Niclas Liebling’s bass anchors the song, driving it forward while Shay Sweeney’s feature on drums adds to the dynamic layers of the song, keeping us lost in this reverie.
Although, the chorus’ lyrics pull us out of this dream with lines like "There’s too many turns and confusions, nauseating me" suggesting that the immensity of "the inescapable abyss of the world" (as quoted by Greg) has engulfed the narrator, unable to simply wander and exist on their own terms.
The contrast of this harsh lyrical reality to the enchanting and dreamy feel of the song and rapid dissonant sound enhances the complexity of the sound, creating a melancholic and vibrantly captivating track. Being only their second single, we can’t wait to be taken on a journey with MANA again.
