ALBUM REVIEW: flipturn - Burnout Days

Ted Flower

2025 has brought with it the release of flipturn's sophomore album ‘Burnout Days’. The twelve tracks flow effortlessly, curated carefully to enhance a smooth and seamless listening experience with an ambience of traditional Indie upbeat music.

The title ‘Burnout Days’ is a homage to how the band have not reaped the rewards of their hard work overnight and have yet to reach the high expectations they have of themselves. The title track implies a sense of realisation that the thrill of love is fading away. Lines like “What am I to you, washed out?, I wanna feel my heart again” offer a dynamic interplay between melancholy and catharsis as if a once-felt warmth has frozen over into indifference.

The introductory track on the record ‘Juno’ epitomises New Wave Indie and sets the tone of the album with a simple but catchy rhythm. This leaves listeners obligated to reminisce on summer days. The lyrics “If everyone is hallucinating, then who’s left to call you crazy” create an atmosphere relevant to the uncertainty of reality, implying that who chooses who has the right to say what is normal or “crazy”.

‘Window’ is a mid-album highlight, showing the bands capability in fluctuating between different genres. There is a noticeable and complimentary shift from Indie-Rock to a slow and melodic track. The refrain within the song “I believe in you” triggers feelings of emotional validation and encouragement.

To conclude, this album encapsulates Indie Rock from start to finish, from catchy riffs and lyrics to remind you of the summer season during colder times to emotive language leaving you deep in personal thought. The album portrays an array of emotive messages, from uncertainty to self-awareness and fuels the album with passion. During the blues of cold upon the shift from colder to warmer days, this album can be expected to thrive in the Indie Rock community, and we trust that a favourable response will be outcoming.
