ALBUM REVIEW: Dubinski - What is your definition of happiness?

Matilda Jane Sangster

Dubinski's second album ‘What is your definition of happiness?’ perfectly blends the infectious elements of their last album, whilst injecting new sounds to create a narrative driven album. As the first lyric in the first track directly mirrors the albums title, Dubinski make you delve into your own conscious thought before shifting into a wider scrutiny on the blindness of political leaders and therefore the consequences it inflicts on society.

In the first track ‘Downtown Operation’, they project a sense of political frustration. Through heavy synths and a catchy beat, they directly portray this angst alongside powerful lyrical verbatim's “You cant compromise with a system that creates inequality”. It's clear that Dubinski not only want us to reflect internally, but make us realise external political influences have a direct impact on our own happiness.

Although this album certainly has political undertones, Dubinski cleverly tap into the personal experiences of their fans too, using their lyrical talents to make you feel seen and understood on a personal level. In their ninth track ‘Making Luck’, they dip into a newfound tenderness, their lyricism seems to embody the universal yet personal experience of heartbreak. Even though we're transported back to hard times it allows us to reflect on what has made us unhappy and therefore what truly makes us happy.

As they gear up for their national tour, taking on major music capitols be sure to immerse yourself in this record.
