ALBUM REVIEW: Der Traum Uber Alles

Matilda Jane Sangster

Since the release of their first studio album, ‘24 Carat Diamond Trephine’ in 2019 , Avalanche Party have only exceeded our expectations with their most recent release 'Der Traum Uber Alles'. Before we even listen to the first track, the title alone, meaning “Dream Above All Else” offers us a brief glimpse into the poetic and elusive yet high-energy collection of songs that the album holds.

From the acoustic introduction of the albums first song 'John Coltrane's Moscow Skyscraper’ and the thoughtful romantic contemplations of 'Ecstasy', to the shift into Punk-Rock angst and thumping grooves of songs like 'Shake The Slack', it's made clear that this group are not scared of blending together different genres to craft a sound that's not only unique, but thoroughly enjoyable. Over 11 tracks, the quintet successfully manage to create a strong narrative for listeners to follow, but inject something new into every song, making us anticipate every sonic twist and turn.

A standout on the album is ‘Slinky’ that leads with a strong drum beat and wonderful lyricism that gives the track a hypnotic feeling. The album's finale ‘Collateral Damage’ repeats the lyrics “no questions”, which is the only ending that fits this angsty and feral album. Fans have “no questions” as to whether Avalanche Party are paving the way in Garage Punk and in-turn cleverly reinventing the genre that inspired them. The albums continuous upbeat tempo and angst gives listeners an invigoration for what Avalanche Party will be releasing next.

Although this quintet are originally from North Yorkshire, with their growing discography they're making a statement internationally. With the European leg of their tour starting in Amsterdam on the 20th March there is no doubt they have built a wide, yet very loyal fanbase.
